Exploring the Benefits of Acupuncture for TMJ: A Holistic Approach

A woman receives guasha treatment for TMJ on her jaw.
TMJ, a complex condition impacting the jaw joint and associated muscles, includes joint issues and myofascial pain, leading to discomfort and restricted movement.

Acupuncture offers a holistic approach, stimulating specific meridian points to relieve the physical and emotional aspects of TMJ. Targeting muscles and trigger points it releases tension, aligns the jaw, and eases discomfort.

Biologically, acupuncture triggers endorphin release, enhances blood circulation for healing, and modulates pain perception, reducing TMJ-related discomfort and intensity.
Addressing stress, acupuncture induces relaxation, alleviating jaw tension. It targets muscle tensions, aiding jaw realignment and discomfort alleviation, encompassing biological, neurological, stress-related, and muscular aspects for a holistic solution.

Combined with Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS), acupuncture intensifies its impact, focusing on specific TMJ trigger points and releasing deeper muscle tensions. Other modalities such as guasha, electrical stimulation, cupping and ear acupuncture may be used in treatments as well.

This holistic treatment approach to TMJ considers physical and emotional aspects, emphasizing a structured treatment plan, initially more frequent, gradually tapering for relief. I typically recommend starting with 4 treatments, spaced out weekly.
